About
Since 2007 Dr. John Ward and I have worked with quarry marking systems, included in the genre of pseudo script, documenting them in ancient quarries and on extracted stone blocks within structure. Currently, we work with a project called 'Pseudo script in Gebel el Silsila, a query into quarry marks, characters, codes and magic', aiming at creating a corpus of quarry markings in situ in quarries, followed by those placed on extracted stone blocks within temple architecture. The aim is to understand their function and meaning.
In addition to the quarry symbols themselves, we follow the ancient trade routes out in the western desert, documenting ancient graffiti and the similarity between pictorial etched graffiti and quarry marks.
My doctoral thesis focused on Ptolemaic iconography and religion including ruler cult, the assimilation of the cultures, and the socio-political positions of early Ptolemaic queens. It introduced a new technique in establishing individual status and general hierarchy in an Egyptian relief scene. This is based on the "crown line"
