About

My research is mainly about ethics, value and policy issues arising in the intersection of health, science & technology, the environment and society. The subject of my dissertation was the morality of abortion and, later, I have published books on the ethical aspects of prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic diagnosis. I am currently completing a new book on the ethical basis of the precautionary principle, that will be published by Rodopi. My research interests also include 'pure' moral and political philosophy, and continue to expand. While still including health care ethics and bioethics, I have recently worked on ethical aspects of, e.g., public health, forensic psychiatry and related legal systems, the social management of technology and risk, as well as the notion of the best interest of children and the nature of secular societies. In essence, I'm very much cross-disciplinary in my approach, and has often collaborated with scientists, practitioners and/or scholars from other fields. I like my philosophy to connect to practice and be informed by empirical research as much as I like it to contain theoretical depth and development.

Born in 1962, I received my ph.d. in practical philosophy at Stockholm University in 1993. After an extended postdoc stay at the Centre for Research Ehics in Gothenburg, I became Associate professor of practical philosophy at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Gothenburg in 1998, and full professor in 2004. Since 2009 I work at the newly formed Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science. 2006-2008, I was Prefekt (Head of Department) of my old department and, currently, I am Vice chair, responsible for research in my new one. I was an appointed member of the Swedish National Council for Medical Ethics from 2000 to 2006, and am currently a member of the International Association of Bioethics, the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg, and The Hinxton Group - An International Consortium on Stem Cells, Ethics & Law. Besides my academic and family life, I also keep myself busy as a musician within the field of free improvised and experimental music.
